Deputy OCS arrested over alleged kidnapping and robbery of couple in Nairobi
A senior police officer attached to the Drive-In Police Post has been arrested after detectives linked him to the alleged abduction and robbery of a couple who had travelled to Nairobi to complete an online sale.
The arrest followed investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations after the couple reported being attacked while delivering a smartwatch to a buyer in the Baba Ndogo area on Thursday afternoon.
According to preliminary findings, the victims were intercepted by three men travelling in a white saloon car. The suspects allegedly forced the couple into the vehicle before driving towards Thika Road.
Police said the suspects demanded Ksh1 million from the victims in exchange for their freedom.
After one of the victims managed to withdraw a small amount of money, the group allegedly drove them to a bank in Githurai to obtain more cash.
While inside the bank, the male victim quietly alerted a member of staff, who immediately informed police officers about the situation.
Officers responded quickly, prompting the suspects to flee.
During the chase, police managed to arrest one of the suspects, while the others escaped with one of the victims still inside the getaway car.
The female victim was later released unharmed along Kamiti Road.
However, the couple lost several mobile phones valued at about Ksh120,000 together with the smartwatch they had intended to deliver.
Detectives questioned the arrested suspect, and the information gathered reportedly led them to the Deputy OCS of the Drive-In Police Post.
The officer was arrested later that evening and remains in custody as investigations continue.
The DCI has since taken over the case and is working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged kidnapping and robbery. Detectives are also pursuing other suspects who are still at large.
The incident comes as Nairobi continues to record an increase in violent robberies targeting businesses and residents. Just two days earlier, police shot dead an alleged gang member and arrested eight others during an intelligence-led operation.
Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud said officers recovered more than 200 mobile phones, four pistols and ammunition believed to have been used in robberies along Thika Road, Mombasa Road and several roads within Kiambu County.
