After weeks of critical investigations, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has identified the suspects it says were involved in the murder of psychologist Dr Victoria Mutiso as investigations into the high profile killing continue.
DCI Director Mohamed Amin said Elijah Kimoi, an officer attached to Karinde Police Station, has been identified by investigators as the officer who allegedly shot and killed Dr Victoria Mutiso.
Investigators also named Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang, attached to Kikuyu Police Station as the officer accused of coordinating the murder. According to the DCI, he remains on the run and is the subject of an active manhunt.
The investigation has also identified Kelvin Ngugi as the rider of the motorcycle allegedly used during the operation, while Daniel Mwangi Njoroge is accused of driving the Prado vehicle linked to the suspects.
Just minutes before the DCI briefing, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua had stated that he was prepared to reveal the identities of the two police officers allegedly involved in the murder. Although he disclosed details about their police stations, he did not publicly mention their names before the DCI announced the identities during the press briefing.
Investigations are ongoing as detectives continue pursuing additional suspects and gathering more evidence in the case.
What's particularly worrying about this case is the sheer confidence and impunity displayed by the rogue officers. They allegedly used their assigned service weapons and didn't even bother to cover their tracks.
That level of recklessness suggests they weren't afraid of being caught or perhaps believed that, even if they were caught, someone, somewhere, had their backs.
